Days 55 - 57

Sleeping location: Mum and Dad’s house, Kalkan, Turkey
Distance (km today/total): 0 / 5368
Estimated climb (m today/total): 0 / 45900
Times I left the house: 2
Day in three words: Poolside mechanical session

A blissful three days spent doing admin and mechanical jobs by the pool, with frequent dips to cool down. Maggie got a substantial strip down and clean, and we replaced a fair few parts. She’s now gleaming and ready to be bashed around on the flight to Jordan. Two problems have been kicked down the road for now due to lack of the right tools and replacement parts; the bottom bracket (or possibly left pedal bearing) keeps clicking, and the chainrings are getting quite worn. Hopefully both will make it to Ethiopia, which is my next chance for a supply package. Mum and dad were both extremely helpful throughout my time here, dad with Maggie assistance and mum with clothes washing and general motherly benevolence. Not sure I said thank you enough in person, but I know they both read the blog so thanks M&D. I also enjoyed dad telling multiple stories to mum that she had already read on the blog, and her feigned interest.

I hardly left the house across the three days, as I was attempting to relax with extreme prejudice in between jobs, so there’s little to actually mention here. Kalkan contains the world’s greatest takeaway (Hunkar kebab house) so there wasn’t even any need to leave the house in the evenings, but we did go into town for dinner one night and met a nice Nottingham couple called Elaine and Simon. They were interested in my journey and took my details, so hello Elaine and Simon if you’re reading this.

The most interesting thing was the Proper Turkish Haircut I had on the last day, up out of Kalkan in a shady square. It’s a favourite of dad’s and the guy recognised him from previous visits. The cut included a full hair and face wash at the end, which was very relaxing. Dad got an additional massage, which I wasn’t even offered - must be some kind of loyalty scheme perk. Or perhaps the price of the massage was getting his ear hairs set on fire with a flaming cotton bud. During our time there a couple of locals popped in to use the barber’s combs and clippers to do their own hair, which the barber didn’t mind in the slightest.

I would have enjoyed one or two more days in Kalkan, relaxing a bit more and maybe going for a couple of dives, but my flight to Jordan and to Rebecca is in two days and there’s a whole lot of fuss to get through before then...
