Days in three words: Bari is love
A blissful four days spent not doing very much in Bari. The airbnb we booked was absolutely great, with an amazing balcony with views over the port, and we spent much of our time on that, sunbathing or playing cards at the table or listening to 80s music and watching the lighthouse flash in the distance. The apartment was also in the middle of the old town, so going out to do any kind of errand meant walking through its maze of winding streets, accidentally going the wrong way and seeing some more of the beautiful city. Bari has so much history but the old town is still very much a place where people live, and after dark it really came alive - people sat out on the street on their own chairs, and filled up the restaurants and bars every night I was there.
A few individual memories:
-Accidentally ordering loads of raw shellfish in a fancy restaurant
-A dive bar with Derby County graffiti about 10ft off the ground (“five men made a pyramid” the barman told us) and no outside seating, so Rebecca went off to collect some random chairs she’d seen in the square earlier and we used those
-Flooding two floors as we didn’t realise that the shower door didn’t work properly
-Having a competition to guess the number of owls in the house, which I won. There were a lot of owls
-Dancing naked on the balcony after a night out
-Having a drunken conversation that involved trying to estimate how much space on earth each person who has ever lived would get if it was divided up equally
Rebecca flew home on Monday and I spent the next couple of days doing relaxed admin in between stints on the balcony. I also got to briefly see Matt again and meet his girlfriend Sarah just before I left, which was nice. I have had such a great time here and I’m kind of sad to be leaving, but the Rigel III must take me on to new adventures.
Actually getting onto the ferry was quite the experience. I came by this afternoon to check things out, and somehow came through at the wrong point and wandered around the restricted area for ages without anyone asking for my credentials. Then this evening I almost got let onto the wrong boat which was also going to Albania. After boarding the correct ferry my hopes were raised by the very fancy reception with dozens of staff waiting to help you out, then quickly dashed when I was shown to my very basic cabin which I am apparently sharing with a burly Albanian man. Still, the restaurant serves “roast lamp” and I must make sure to sample this local delicacy.
